Too Funny

The Teabaggers are the most entertaining comedy troupe in America. Not only did they give us Paul LePage - they still can't admit that the president was born in the US. This picture is a great spoof from the Huffington Post...but not far from the arguments I hear from the "right" on the radio. There's stupid...then there's Teabag stupid.

Happy Easter

My wife made THE BEST ham dinner tonight. Jim is up from DC and joined us for our Easter feast. We started with really good vichyssoise:

Even the croutons were homemade. The roasted veggies were awesome:

The whole meal was fantastic.

We had some great conversation over dessert and watched the adventures of Baxter and the Red Sox on TV. A very nice time had by all.

Ragged Mountain Morning

A gorgeous morning to climb another coastal gem. Ragged Mountain has two different trails to the top, and they are equally interesting. The people that cut these paths know that the trip through the woods should be as exciting as the summit itself. This long trail passes by huge boulder fields:

There is also a lot of flora to observe. I like trying to see different plant life. I've seen edelweiss on the big peaks of NH, lots of witch-hobble, and many kinds of moss. I don't know what this is - but I always call it "potato chip" moss:

There are no bears or moose in this part of the state, but there is wildlife:

The trail also allows some views part of the way up.

The peak has 360 degree sight lines, and always lots of hawks. Today I saw five all soaring together.

I'm in ghastly shape...I'll try to get out one more time this week.

Bald-Rock

My goal is to get out 3 times during this break, and start getting into "real" mountain shape. These small coastal hills are fun and provide awesome views on a nice day. Bald-Rock in Lincolnville did not disappoint. These ladies and their dog beat me to the summit:
This kind of view is what gets my well-over-middle-aged body onto trails:
A beautiful morning - I'll keep working my way toward the big peaks.

Monthly Meal - A Taste of Newfoundland

One has to get the feeling that things are getting back to normal when my parents come out for a monthly meal. I'm awfully glad that Ma is getting a significant amount of her strength back. The star of the Newfoundlander meal was the haddock shepherd's pie.
It was very tasty. The recipe included the fish, spinach, corn, cheese, and potatoes that had pesto mixed in.
We also had coffee and cheese cake for dessert.
One of the more simple meals - but it was very good. I'm looking for ideas for next month!

Sometimes Living in the Woods...

...can be a problem. It was very windy and rainy last night and into this morning. We lost power around 6am and got it back around noon. M-S and I decided to go to Waterville to run some errands and have brunch at the Last Unicorn. The scene above is what we stumbled across on our road as we tried to get out. Not much of a mystery as to the power problem. By the time we returned from brunch (which was AWESOME) the power was back. No walk for Baxter today - but he had a nice one yesterday:
99% of the time we love living in the sticks, but we were a little worried this morning. I'll be watching baseball this afternoon and then Ma & Dad are coming out for supper. I'll write again after the meal.

Beautiful Morning on Bald~Hope

Its been a while since I've written here - I've been unbelievably busy - so having a morning to spend on one of my favorite small mountains was a welcome respite.
It was a beautiful 50 degrees with a slight breeze. I love a mountain steam in the spring:
Me being artsy:
Some parts of the trail were icy and a bit tricky:
VERY nice on the peak:

I need to get onto more trails this year!
