I saw this movie the other day - and I really enjoyed it. Baseball films are my favorite, and The Winning Team is about Grover Cleveland Alexander. Reagan does a very good job in this one. AND, Doris Day sings a Christmas carol - check it out some time. I really need to start collecting baseball movies.
Its 7pm and I'm at Winslow High watching a debate with students. I allowed students to bring food - and 40 are here with me now!

...to be in the woods with a puppy. M-S, Baxter, and I have had a great weekend so far. Last night my parents treated us to dinner at the China Dine-ah.
I had the "BBQ Samplah":
It tasted as good as it looks. This morning I took the garbage and recycling to the dump, then we took Baxter for his first mountain climb:
He absolutely loved it. He met some other people and some other dogs.
It was pretty busy at the top, so I didn't get any pictures from the tower.
There were too many people up there and three dogs - so we just gave Baxter a drink:
and made our way back down. He was a good dog - no barking or spazzing out too much. There was one pit bull that wanted to play with Bax like a dog toy. It was a gorgeous morning and we all had a good time.
Little sister Suz and bro-in-law Grant were up for a few days and we joined them for dinner at the 'Cup.
I had a turkey club (I haven't had a club sandwich in YEARS), and M-S had a fantastic shepherd's pie. The vegans had veggie burgers, which also looked very good. Grant and I tried a few different beers - the best one I had was a "guest" beer - pumpkin stout. We had a great visit, the two of them head back to DC tomorrow. I'm not sure when they might be back, as they will not be coming north for the high holidays. I will be there in early December, though. I love spending time with the siblings - especially when fine food and grog are involved!
...this time of year. Fall has always been and will forever be my favorite time. Cold mornings, brisk days, the smells, and the joy of being outdoors. Shorts, a sweatshirt, sandals, and being outside - simply the best.
Sarah, Ma, Dad, Suz, and Grant came out for a visit and to play with Baxter today.

After years of bringing students to Washington DC and Broadway, I sadly must report that it seems like that experience has run its course. While planning for this year's adventure it was becoming more and more apparent that two things were converging: the cost of everything was rising too rapidly to keep pace with our students' ability to pay and that the economy is also impacting our sign-up in general. Its too bad, because it was a great experience, but its also somewhat of a relief to actually remove something from my plate. Life goes on.
After packing this morning I took a cab to have a delicious brunch with Grant and Suz. We had a nice visit and then Grant took me on a scenic tour of the DC country side to get to the airport. The flight was fine and its GREAT to be home.
Baxter was excited to see me and I think he's gained at least 5 pounds this week. I had a very interesting and eventful week, and I look forward to doing more for THE premier education organization in the world.
I got a little too much sun this afternoon. We spent a gorgeous DC afternoon on the National Mall for the One Nation Working Together March.

It was a blast! Our NEA President (Dennis Van Roekel) spoke, as did Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and many others. And - we had more people than the Glenn Beck hate rally. A fun day.
Day one of the NEA Board was very interesting. Listening to reports and presentations, voting on action items, being involved in "strategic discussions", and networking with educators from around the nation has been great. Tomorrow is more of the same in the morning and then its over to the Lincoln Memorial for the One Nation Working Together march.
